Chapter 15

Lunch in Talkeetna was a relaxed affair, for the guests, that is. I was starving by the time we got a chance to eat. It was almost three in the afternoon and everyone decided to go for the fish and chips. The beer batter was light and crunchy and the tartar sauce was piquant enough to cut the grease. The fish came from the local river and had been caught fresh that morning.

RK told us she had arranged a special dinner for the tour group back on the ship. She had given it a theme and was calling it Grandma’s Specials. I wondered if lasagna would feature on it. Fresh seafood was fine but I was craving something hearty that did not come from the water.

The train to Anchorage arrived on time and RK ordered us to make sure everyone was comfortable. Ashley wasn’t happy. The best views of Mount Denali could be seen fifteen minutes from Talkeetna. She wanted to be out on the viewing platform at that time.

“But guess what?” she grumbled. “We’ll be busy pouring coffee.”

The train slowed after a while so everyone could admire the view. Most passengers were already outside. We had to be satisfied with peering out of the glass windows.

“Maybe next time,” I whispered to Ashley.

RK heard us and frowned. That meant she would give us a talk on how we always needed to have a smile on our faces, no matter how angry, irritated or sad we actually were.

The train arrived in Anchorage and we piled into a van that had been reserved for our group. We did a little drive through the city to look at some sights and then headed to the cruise terminal. The Silver Queen loomed ahead. I wasn’t looking forward to my stamp sized cabin but I confess, the ship almost felt like home.

Max pulled me aside near the ramp. He was beginning to treat me like his personal drudge. I didn’t mind, as long as he kept me flush.

“How can I help you, Max?” I beamed.

“You leave my Dani alone,” he thundered. “Stop badgering her, okay? She’s seventeen!”

That’s what I got for being an agony aunt.

“No problemo!” I grinned from ear to ear.

I must have looked ridiculous but I was doing my best to act cool. Escaping RK wasn’t that easy. She was everywhere! I saw her glaring at me from the corner of my eye and knew my moment of reckoning was coming.

Cecilia Pierce commandeered my help to climb the ramp. Luca stood at the top to welcome the passengers back to the ship, bearing a tray of champagne. Mickey materialized and handed a flute of bubbly to the old lady, getting a rare smile out of her. Ashley and Jeong Soo had already transported all the luggage. I jogged down the ramp for a last check, savoring the solid feel of land below my feet.

The ship’s horn sounded, warning any stragglers to get aboard. I heard a shout and saw a family of six waving at me, running toward the ship.
